Swedish Summer Clinical Field Education
Clinical Field Education at Swedish Hospital offers a diverse setting, pastoral mentoring, and hands-on clinical pastoral experience at a historically faith-based acute care hospital near the North Park campus.
Field Education is anticipated to be scheduled between June 7 and August 20, 2021. Swedish Hospital employee health screenings and general orientation will need to be completed prior to beginning of the program. Training for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hospital safety protocols will be provided.
While this program is technically not a full-time commitment, it can be emotionally stressful and physically strenuous. Students are advised to limit other commitments over the summer. Each student will need to accommodate other students’ schedules, hospital needs, and program guidelines. Good communication and flexibility are keys to successfully completing this program. If you plan to register for a summer intensive or have significant schedule limitations, please contact a chaplain to see if Swedish Hospital Clinical Field Education will work for you.
If you have any questions or want to apply, email Tim Johnson for the application at tjohnson2@northpark.edu OR Lead Chaplain Rev. Eric Hillabrant, MDiv, BCC at 773-878-8200 X 5363 or ehillabrant@schosp.org
Campus Lenten Meditation: Art Displayed in Nyvall Hall
You are invited to come meditate on the Seven Last Words of Christ in Nyvall. The words or “phrases” are the final words breathed by Jesus as he hung on the cross of his death. These “words” are a guide to meditation during Lent and particularly in Holy Week. The images on the posters by artist, Scott Erickson, are displayed as a way to pray with our eyes. For those who appreciate a more “active” way of prayer there are additional embodied ways of prayer at each station. Each word is an invitation to pray, to be still and to commune with God in this Holy Season of Lent. May God bless your time in prayer this Lenten season.
Mental Health First Aid:

The Hispanic Summer Program is excited to inaugurate the HSP Exchange. The Exchange will present a special opportunity for alumni, faculty, and allies of the Hispanic Summer Program to engage directly with some of our country’s best thought leaders on topics that are highly relevant to the Latinx community and the issues we face. In addition to a leading presenter, each Exchange event will include an opportunity for our community to dialogue together in a small group setting. We know that many of our alums and friends are excited about the opportunity to connect with each other, support each other in community, and to continue the important conversations they began during their HSP experience.
In this inaugural Exchange, we are delighted to welcome the highly regarded HSP faculty member and Associate Professor of Worship at Union Theological Seminary, Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes. This Exchange event is offered on the eve of Maundy Thursday, Dr. Carvalhaes will discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic requires a distinct liturgical response for Black and Brown communities who have been disproportionately affected by this global crisis. After hearing Dr. Carvalhaes’ remarks, participants will be invited to a facilitated discussion on how these ideas concretely apply to their communities of concern.
If you would like to be part of this timely event, RSVP by March 28, 2021.
Zoom invite will be sent to guests upon RSVP.

Anti-Asian Hate Town Hall Presentation
Dr. Boaz Johnson recently hosted a town hall meeting with Dr. Russell Jeung; Rev. Greg Yee; and Rev. Mary Chung March to discuss the Asian American experience during COVID19. It includes educational sections and calls for lamenting the climate of hate we have created and the context of fear that many Asian Americans are experiencing.
Here is a recording of the Town Hall if you would to listen in on this important conversation.
