The Praxis of Accompaniment: Integrative Pastoral Care
August 14 – 25, 2023
Applications and Recommendations Due June 2, 2023
Co-Taught by:
Dr. Mayra Picos-Lee of Palmer Seminary (Pastoral Care and Counseling)
Dr. Chris Tirres of DePaul University (Theology)
Dr. Ángel Gallardo of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (History)
Megan Kennedy-Farrell of Solidarity Bridge (Intercultural Communication)
Dr. Jorge Juan Rodríguez V of the Hispanic Summer Program (History and Latinx Studies)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Praxis of Accompaniment is a unique and innovative course that equips students with the historical, theological, intercultural, and counseling tools to provide pastoral care and chaplaincy accompaniment in Latin American contexts. By analyzing pastoral care case studies from Solidarity Bridge, Doctors without Borders, and other like organizations through the lens of theology, history, counseling, and Catholic social theory, students will reflect on the nuances of providing pastoral care in Latin America, while also interrogating the particularities of Latinidad within the United States context. It does so through a unique en conjunto pedagogy that brings together five expert scholars and practitioners who will co-teach this course using an integrative approach to education that will help students see how theory and practice combine to promote a praxis of accompaniment.

Announcing the New Engebretson Chair!
I am thrilled to announce that Pastor Michelle S. Dodson has accepted the position of Milton B. Engebretson Chair in Evangelism & Justice, beginning August 2023.
Prof Dodson has contributed invaluably to the NPTS community as a respected colleague and beloved professor. We are so fortunate to be welcoming her now in this new role. The search committee was unanimous in its affirmation of Michelle, and we await with anticipation how her exceptional academic, pastoral, and leadership gifts will contribute to the flourishing of our students, the School of Restorative Arts, and the Seminary as a whole. We are thankful for who you are and all you bring to this community, Michelle!

LeadNow! at Wild Goose
We are reviving the LeadNow program, a cohort for seminarians and first-call pastors that meets in conjunction with Wild Goose Festival in Harmony, NC in July. The cohort is an opportunity for participants to build a network of justice-minded colleagues around the country to offer support and camaraderie in the early days of their ministry. The cohort will meet a day early prior to the official start of the festival to share in small group sessions with top Wild Goose speakers and special expert coaching and workshopping sessions for participants’ new ministry dreams.
In addition, participants in the cohort receive a full scholarship for festival registration and camping, meaning participants are only responsible for the costs of travel and food. Our first online gathering is coming up quickly this week and we will accept applications until the festival begins in July.
