Catalyst on Campus: Strategies in Community Safety
Wednesday, October 18th, 12:30 to 2:00 pm in Johnson Center 314
This event is sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, the Urban Peace Lab, and Center for Civic Engagement at North Park University.
Strategies in Community Safety:
The Council on Criminal Justice recently reported that homicide rates have declined in 32 U.S. cities during the first half of 2023, but are still higher than pre pandemic levels. While this trend is also true of Chicago, sadly, the Chicago Sun Times reports almost 450 victims of homicide this year to date. To address this national crisis, President Biden recently formed the new Office of Gun Violence Prevention in hopes of finding new solutions. This initiative mirrors Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s efforts in 2021 to align city departments’ efforts in support of public safety objectives through the creation of the Community Safety Coordination Center (CSCC).
As the public sector searches for answers, local leaders, residents, and academicians, including North Park University’s Professor of Sociology Dr. Peter K. B. St. Jean, continue to champion new strategies in public safety.
On Wednesday, October 18th (12:30-2:00pm, JC 314), Dr. St. Jean will moderate a conversation with local leaders on the forefront of innovative community safety efforts, including:
Pastor Phil Jackson, Founder and CEO, The Firehouse Community Arts Center
“For over 30 years, Pastor Phil Jackson has served on the front lines of neighborhood development, violence interruption, and urban youth ministry…In the North Lawndale neighborhood, Pastor Phil planted a youth church called The House, featuring a hip-hop worship service, and eventually founded The Firehouse Community Art Center of Chicago, which offers year-round, multi-disciplinary cultural arts programming, mentorship, leadership, and workforce development centered around the prevention and interruption of violence. In 2019-2020, the Firehouse won five Chicago / Midwest Emmy Awards for the feature-length documentary film Chicago at the Crossroad. Pastor Phil has written a book and has a Sirius XM radio show.”
