Catalyst on Campus: Migrant Crisis – Context and Response

Wednesday, September 20, 12:30 to 2:00 pm in Johnson Center 314

Since last August, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has sent over 13,000 migrants to Chicago as a political demonstration against current immigration policies. With city shelters at full capacity, many individuals and families have had to find shelter at local police stations and churches. Despite polarized views over immigration policy, in line with our Christian, Intercultural, and City-Centered distinctives, the Center for Civic Engagement would like to invite our campus community to learn from local community-based organizations and colleagues supporting asylum seekers. Panelists will offer context on what they are seeing on the ground and provide suggestions on how our campus community can align with current efforts.

Panelists:

Dalia Aragon, Housing, Health, and Safety Director | North River Commission (NRC)
Dalia leads NRC’s initiatives supporting asylum seekers and participates in various local committees mobilizing volunteer engagement.

Matt Ostercamp, Director of Brandel Library | North Park University
Matt co-leads the migrant ministry at Immanuel Anglican Church. The building Immanuel worships in hosts 825 migrants.

We are awaiting final confirmation on additional panelists.

The session will be moderated by Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish & Latino Studies, Angelica Ahlman.

Class Credit Info:
If you are a student participating for class credit, please sign in at the event in person.

All students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

Lunch will be provided.

We also offer Mental Health First Aid Training so that you can learn how to help friends and family that might be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.

Individual Counseling – available to all full-time and degree-seeking part-time students, allows an individual to explore concerns with an objective counselor in order to work toward goals established by the student. Counseling Support Services offers brief counseling, up to 20 sessions, and sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes, primarily on a weekly basis. However, the number and frequency of sessions vary and are determined based on student need and counselor recommendation and availability.
