The complexity of ministry in the contemporary world requires thoughtful spiritual leadership. When striving to be effective servant leaders, experienced pastors and mentors can provide inspiration and guidance.
This year’s Palmquist Lecture features Rev. Dr. Ray Hammond and Rev. Dr. Gloria White-Hammond, co–pastors of Bethel AME Church in Boston, MA. Their ministry in Boston spans several decades of significant influence and impact in the church, in their city, and throughout the world. The Hammonds will offer insight and exhortation drawn from real life practical experience as urban pastors.
Both are medical doctors who have served their community as pastors, medical professionals, and as community leaders. They are also the co-founders of Bethel AME Church, which is a church plant in the Jamaica Plains neighborhood in Boston, MA. This thriving church provides an example of a faithful community of believers making an impact in their neighborhood and city. As pastors of this church, Ray and Gloria have demonstrated effective pastoral leadership and servant hearts in the complex ministry context of Boston. Pastor Ray served as a key leader in the ministry of the Boston Ten Point Coalition, which has served as a model for engagement with urban at-risk youth. Pastor Gloria has worked to address the crisis in Darfur, Sudan and was one of the first Americans to address the crisis. Both of our speakers are examples of ministry arising from a spiritual depth and compassionate hearts.
