A Note from the Dean of the Seminary, Dr. Dennis R. Edwards
I’m still reveling over the book launch party that the NPTS community hosted for me on Monday, Nov 13th. Many who are part of our campus community were in attendance but whether you were physically present or not, please know that I am grateful for the show of support around my new book, Humility Illuminated. However, the gathering was about more than the celebration of a new book. We all know that there are many books in the world—some might say too many! But being part of a supportive community is never to be taken for granted. That’s why the gathering means so much to me. It represents the way the NPTS community attempts to support each other, cheer for each other, and generally hope the best for each other. We are not competing against each other but striving to move in the same direction—closer to the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the center of the universe.
Some of us might be gathering for Thanksgiving with family and friends. Ideally, that will be a joyous time, yet I know that such gatherings might conjure up sad memories or prompt difficult conversations. Yet, I encourage you at this holiday time to take the opportunity to express our gratitude to God for the many blessings we have and to thank those whom God has placed in our lives. In his letter to the Colossians, in a section that offers several admonitions, Paul mentions thankfulness twice in close proximity: 3:15 and 17.
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful… And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
As you seek to let Christ’s peace have full control, even during challenging moments, take some time to express your gratitude to God and to others. Your gift of thankfulness will yield fruit, even if you do not see it right away.
God bless you and Happy Thanksgiving!
