Catalyst on Campus: Toya Wolfe, Last Summer on State Street

Wednesday, February 22, 2023

12:30-2:00 pm

Johnson Center 314 and Facebook Live

Join the English Department and Catalyst for a reading and discussion with Chicago author Toya Wolfe. Her widely acclaimed novel Last Summer on State Street centers the experience of four young black girls living in the Chicago Housing Authority’s Robert Taylor Homes on the city’s south side.

The New York Times praises Last Summer on State Street as “a remarkable achievement,”  calling it “tragic, hopeful,” and “brimming with love.” Natalie Moore describes the book as “an ode to black girls who are often forgotten,” adding that it is “compelling, warm, and funny.” Alex Kotlowitz comments “Wolfe writes with such grace and such restraint, I felt like I was sitting on the front porch listening to a story told by a friend. What a spectacular debut.”

Like her protagonists, Toya Wolfe grew up in Bronzeville. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia College Chicago. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications, including African Voices, Chicago Journal, Chicago Reader, Hair Trigger 27, and WarpLand. Toya is no stranger to North Park, having had stints here as both student and adjunct instructor. We are thrilled to welcome her back to campus, and invite all to attend this event.

Students participating for class credit should sign in at the event in person.

Contact Catalyst Hub Office Assistant Marcia Lillard (mmlillard@northpark.edu) with any questions.

Register Today | HSP Exchange with Dr. Mayra Picos-Lee

On the Topic:

“Migration, Resilience, and Trauma”

Event Date: March 8, 2023

Time: 7:00 PM (EST) / 6:00 pm (CST) / 5:00 pm (MST) / 4:00 pm (PST)

For this sixteenth HSP Exchange, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Mayra Picos-Lee, a native of Mexico who teaches pastoral care and counseling at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University and is the Director of the MTS Latino/a Ministries program. Dr. Picos-Lee also serves as Board Chair for the Hispanic Summer Program (HSP) and Special Assistant in Pastoral Care and Counseling with International Ministries of American Baptist Churches, USA, to support its global partners in their work and ministries among migrants and refugees worldwide.

Dr. Picos-Lee’s HSP Exchange lecture will explore the increased sense of vulnerability that has characterized the experiences of migration and displacement for latinx people and communities as a source of pain and trauma and resilience and empowerment. What makes the difference? How do we build hope from despair and resilience from trauma?

In addition to her role at Palmer Theological Seminary, Dr. Picos Lee will teach a fully online history course at the HSP 2023 Summer Session entitled “Migración, desplazamiento, y trauma en las comunidades latinx / Migration, displacement, and trauma in Latinx communities.”

Note: this lecture will be followed by a QnA with the speaker.

If you would like to be part of this event, please RSVP by Monday, March 6, 2023.

Zoom invites will be sent to RSVP’d guests on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.
